August 2018 Vancouver two-day “knowledge transfer” to learn from SMEs about Unity for animated storytelling.

Challenge

Unity’s training workshop products were created for direct sales and business to business (B2B) partnership resale.

Customers and training partners needed high quality training products on a variety of topics. The goal was to design a set of materials to meet those needs and make complex topics more accessible.

Discover and Define Strategies

  • Interview customers

  • Interview subject matter experts

  • Define the learning outcomes

  • Scope the project

Detailed instructor handbooks and slides, and in-depth participant ebooks were designed and shipped with each training.

Solution

We focused on developing concise and clear information architecture, building scaffolded activities that reflected the learner journey, and collecting insights from subject matter experts. We then created processes to streamline the production of workshops and make our materials consistent and intuitive.

Develop and Deliver Strategies

  • Develop project specs

  • Coordinate project creation

  • Coordinate technical writers

  • Develop instructor guides, slides, and ebooks

My ROLE

I created several workshop products including Introduction to Animated Storytelling, Unity for Animation Studios, HDRP High Fidelity Lighting, and others. In the process of designing these workshops I’ve spent hundreds—if not thousands—of hours talking to Unity engineers and product managers about Unity. My learning design strategy is learner-focused backwards design: What does the creator need to be able to do?

“The M&E team gives massive shout out and kudos to Megan for building out learning paths for Animation by competency and persona. Her hard work is incredibly detailed and accurate and approached from an artist perspective. We will be using and promoting this content all year as adoption is critical for success on a self starter basis. She has laid the bed rock for us!”  - Kirsten Cameron, M&E PMM, Unity
