Challenge

Some of the most well-known companies in the world have purchased Unity custom training products. I wish I could tell you who, but we have NDAs.

Companies often need custom training to address their specific training needs and they need that training within a very short turnaround time.

Discover and Define Strategies

  • Customer needs assessments are the most critical part of designing custom training and active listening is an absolutely essential skill for accurate needs assessments.

From needs assessments we write “Statements of Work” which outline our suggestions for the customer, from there we iterate based on feedback, and then move forward with the development process.

Solution

To meet the demand, we designed and developed just-in-time custom training by repurposing existing projects, working with internal subject matter experts, developing fast outlines and hands-on learning activities. To validate our process we asked participants to complete NPS assessments, did retrospective meetings with instructors, and regularly iterated based on results.

Develop and Deliver Strategies

  • Translating a needs assessment into a statement of work and then revising based on customer feedback was an essential part of our design process.

My ROLE

I was the primary instructional designer for more than a dozen custom training sessions. I conducted needs assessments with customers, met with experts, wrote statements of work, authored lesson plans, procured contractors, commissioned projects and technical tutorials, and iterated based on results.
